Rest and reset are tricky things. I once went on a spiritual silent retreat, and spent an entire solitary morning trekking (speechlessly) through the woods, looking for the perfect place to sit and journal and await revelations from the universe. I ended up with less than an hour to dangle my bare feet into a creek while perched on a conveniently bent branch, notebook on my knee. After the silent part concluded and participants gathered for lunch and to discuss their experiences, I discovered that almost everyone else had gathered in a bench lined moss garden a five minute walk from the retreat center. For some, a meditative hike could have been an opportunity for divine connection, but for me, it was more like running away.
